Housing Discrimination Alert

Officials step up education, outreach efforts to reach immigrant communities about "fair housing" rights.

Housing discrimination cases have been on the rise in Fairfax County in the past few years. And the Office of Human Rights and Equity Programs (OHREP), the agency that enforces fair housing laws in the county, is shining a spotlight on the problem through seminars for housing providers, realtors, community groups and other interested parties. "Sadly, housing discrimination is alive and well and we’ve seen an uptick in complaints during the past six years," said Kenneth Saunders, executive director of OHREP.

Shaving Away Childhood Cancer

St. Baldrick’s Fund-Raiser Is March 17

Every year, 160,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. It also kills more children in Canada and the U.S. than any other disease. So the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has dedicated itself to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers. And a group of determined and enthusiastic local residents is helping.

Cheerleaders of the Year

Sam Culin, a Liberty Middle School 8th grader, and Graciela Perez, a Robinson Middle School 8th grader, were both awarded Cheerleader of the Year by the Fairfax County Youth Football League at their annual Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday, March 4 at the McLean Hilton. Both girls cheer for Southwestern Youth Association's Extreme Silver cheerleading squad.
